How to Shop for Funeral Services

How to Shop for Funeral Services

Making preparations for a funeral is never easy. By planning funeral services in advance, you can relieve your family of this burden when the time comes. Pre-planning requires that you shop for a funeral home in your area, learn about service options, calculate funeral prices and make necessary arrangements before your demise.

Funeral Services: Understanding Your Rights

By law, (Funeral Rule, enforced by the FTC) you have the right to make funeral arrangements as you desire. This includes choosing a funeral home, type of burial, memorial service, casket or other products/services you want.

When shopping for funeral services, take the time to compare what various funeral homes in your area have to offer. Most funeral homes offer package deals at pre-calculated costs. You have the right, however, to create your own package by selecting the precise services and products you want. If a funeral home tries to restrict your choices, eliminate that option from your shopping list.

What to Look for in a Funeral Home

Funeral homes vary in their mode of operation, services and costs. A home that offers a variety of services provides greater options to personalize your funeral to suit personal taste and budget. Making a checklist of the services you want and their costs will help you stay within your financial means. Be sure to get a detailed, written price estimate for any arrangements you make with a funeral home to eliminate misunderstandings when the time comes.

Visiting a funeral home in person and talking to the director could help you decide who’s best suited for the job. Funeral planning is much easier when you work with caring, understanding people who have your best interests at heart.

Types of Funerals

Funeral costs vary depending on the type of funeral and services you want:

A traditional full-service funeral generally requires a casket, embalming (if there’s a viewing), use of a hearse for transporting body, burial plot, burial services and headstone. You can rent a hall at the funeral home for a viewing and memorial or have services at home or the cemetery site.

In a direct burial, the deceased is buried shortly after their demise. Memorial services can be conducted at home or the burial site. Costs entail the purchase of a casket, transport for the body, cemetery plot and burial services.

Direct cremation entails the cremation services and purchase of an urn, making it the most frugal of all your funeral options. A burial plot for the remains is optional.

Pre-paid Funerals: Pros and Cons

Pre-planned/paid funerals have their pros and cons. It takes a financial and emotional burden off your family as all funeral arrangements have been made in advance. It also allows you to have the type of funeral you desire.

On the flip side, pre-paid funerals tie up funds that could be used for other purposes. Irrevocable contracts cannot be canceled to get your money back. If your contract doesn’t guarantee full coverage of your funeral services, your family may need to make up the difference in costs.
